The success of Wifies' Searching For A World That Doesn't Exist and the subsequent boom of Minecraft ARG videos shined light on the idea of a story being told via a YouTube gaming channel, which was an inspiring concept to us. Many of the stories in this niche featured a high-stakes antagonist, like a ghost in the machine, or a CIA black-op, so we challenged ourselves to achieve a similar level of fear while writing about ordinary people.
Our story follows 4 soon-to-be high-schoolers Christian, Mateo, Polly, and AJ. Stuck inside with nothing to do, they start a YouTube gaming series. As they learn to hate each other, they fail to notice their friend's suffering until it's too late.
"Space Cowboy" is the project title we gave it, referencing the series' outro card taken from "Cowboy Bebop".
When all was said and done, this project took us about 2 months to complete.
About one month was spent writing. With the understanding that a first-person videogame playthrough is a limiting medium in terms of cinematography, acting, and music, a strong narrative was non-negotiable (not that we would settle for less otherwise).
About another month was spent recording, editing, and testing. We would shoot 2-3 episodes at a time, show them to our (very patient) test audience, and use our gathered notes to detirmine A) whether or not we needed to reshoot an episode and B) whether or not the subsequent episodes needed to be rewritten due to our plot getting lost.
Whatever time we had left over was spent being incredibly particular about how each character should be building, moving, and editing.
